As part of GI Pharma Month, Ger Brennan, Managing Director of MSD Human Health in Ireland, speaks on the history of the Guaranteed Irish company MSD in Ireland.
MSD Ireland is one of the country’s leading healthcare companies, having first established here over 50 years ago. We currently employ over 1,600 employees, across four sites in Ballydine, Co Tipperary, Brinny, Co Cork, Carlow and Dublin and, in addition, operate substantial Human Health and Animal Health business in Dublin. To date, we have invested $2.5 billion in our Irish operations and our annual turnover ranks us as one of Ireland’s top 20 companies. In the first half of 2017 we also announced that we intend to create over 330 jobs and invest further in our sites in Cork and Carlow in the next three years. In addition our Irish sites manufacture approximately half of MSD’s top twenty products, saving and enhancing lives in over sixty countries around the world. MSD Ireland is proud of our Guaranteed Irish statement in recognition of the fact that a number of our key medicines are developed or manufactured in our Carlow, Cork and Tipperary sites.
At MSD, we have and always will be…Inventing for Life. These three powerful words reflect our commitment to inventing new medicines and vaccines that save lives by preventing and fighting disease and unmet healthcare issues. With this focus firmly in our sight, MSD Ireland makes products that touch the lives of many patients across the country each day. Our extensive Human Health portfolio includes innovative solutions and treatments for conditions such as oncology, diabetes, arthritis, allergies, hepatitis C, and HIV as well as a comprehensive vaccines portfolio for every stage of life. Our product pipeline is focussed on continued investment and investigation in our core treatment areas such as Diabetes, Oncology and Vaccines while also developing new and innovative treatments in areas of high unmet medical need such as Alzheimer’s and infectious disease.
At MSD Ireland we firmly believe that the most important thing we make is a difference – to patients, to our employees, to our communities and to the Irish healthcare landscape generally. As well as supporting and championing patients’ interests, we’re also very focused on giving back to the communities that we operate in and bringing real value to the Irish healthcare landscape generally. Over the last five years we have consistently been ranked as one of the top five business contributors in Ireland, volunteering over 1400 hours to over 500 local projects to a range of worthy causes and projects.
In terms of what the future holds, our key focus at the present is to work with all stakeholders – Government, healthcare providers, patient organisations and our local communities with a view to improving the healthcare system to benefit the patient better. We will continue to engage with patients to ensure we do everything we can do to support them while they’re undergoing treatment and also to ensure their needs are heard and placed at the centre of any debate about Ireland’s healthcare system. We’re committed to continuing to invent new medicines and treatments to address unmet healthcare in Ireland and working with Government to ensure that these treatments are then made available to patients quicker.
