Guaranteed Irish is concerned over the European Commission’s proposed initiative to ensure all products manufactured in the EU carry a mandatory “Made in the EU” label.
The European Commission is still deciding whether to draw up a formal proposal but if it is taken further, traditional national origin marks could be replaced with a generic EU mark. Guaranteed Irish believes that this approach would meddle with market forces and the freedom to choose by both the manufacturer and the consumer.
Many of our members trade on the Irishness and to label products ‘Made in EU’ will as we see it devalue Irish products.
Loosing the opportunity of letting the final consumer know the origin of what he or she is going to buy, is a restriction for many of our manufacturers.
If this proposal is taken forward, Guaranteed Irish will lobby the EU vigorously on behalf of its members.
