Recent research conducted by SIRO validated what we see on the ground amongst Irish SMEs – that the take up of fibre broadband by Irish business, particularly small businesses, is very slow. Recent research found 53% of SMEs are still relying on older broadband technologies. High quality connectivity is the foundation required to enable digitisation of all business.

Think Cloud, AI and machine learning, automation processes, remote and hybrid working, digital payments, robotics, even security where fibre broadband is increasingly supporting CCTV technology.

However, the why or benefits of fibre broadband to Irish SMEs such as those listed above is still something which many appear not to be aware of. What difference will high quality broadband connectivity make to my business? Industry and policymakers, including SIRO, need to do more to grow awareness amongst small businesses of the importance of migration to fibre and the benefits they will gain from it.

The last consideration is the fact that copper switch off is expected to commence later this year. This risks creating a cliff edge scenario for business.
